"christi crux est mihi lux"
[THIS IS A COMMITMENT: The rhythms are solely built on each individual's own motivation and volition. Commitment to the rhythms is up to you and the Holy Spirit -- and, we hope, a few friends too!]
THE 3 RHYTHMS ARE SIMPLE -- THE EFFECTS PROFOUND
"I COMMIT TO THE PRACTICE OF LUX CHRISTI IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS...."
PLEASE READ THROUGH THE FIRST FAQ BELOW ("HOW DO I PRACTICE COMMITMENT TO THE RHYTHMS?") TO GET THE DETAILS....
*A word on "hear" -- we recognize that we are made wonderfully in the image of God -- some of us metabolize the Word of God more easily by listening, while others metabolize the Word of God more easily by visual reading. The main point is do it. Do it your way -- but do it.
We recommend you make the following commitments as a practitioner of the Lux Christi rhythms. Think of a musician, or a gardener -- regular practice makes for fruitful experience!
WEEKLY -- GOSPELS
Read/Listen* to a Gospel selection (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John)
ANNUALLY -- GOSPELS
Read/Listen to all 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)
ANNUALLY -- PRAYER
Solo or Group Prayer Retreat
ALWAYS -- SERVE
Service in Jesus' Name
EXAMPLES FOR PRACTICE
(Helpful "starters"--we're sure there are other ways too, please consider these examples)
Start with Jesus, and let Him interpret the rest of the Word and the rest of your life through His lens alone.
In the first few centuries following Christ's resurrection and ascension to rule as Lord, the people who followed Him would gather regularly to listen to the public reading of eye-witness accounts of His life, ministry, death, and resurrection (found in the four Gospels, especially). Most movements of growth in the Christian Faith since those early centuries were connected to "regular" people reading the Word of God regularly, and being transformed from the inside-out by God's Spirit and His Word. There's something powerful about metabolizing God's word and letting Him change me.
The core practices of Lux Christi (the rhythms) seek to encourage a structure that reflects this commitment.
When Martin Luther (as well as other reformers) sought to return the Catholic Church to a more pure practice, the core of his approach was to bring God's Word back to the center of Christian life. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ..." (Romans 10:17).
Of course, ALL of the Bible should be heard regularly to grow faith. It's a phenomenal library, each word inspired by God to grow faith and -- through the lens of faith -- shows Christ at work in every story (even the gross ones!).
Still, "young" and "old" Christians do well to keep their eyes and ears on the eye-witness accounts of Christ's life and ministry found in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We encourage everyone to read the whole Bible regularly. The Lux Christi commitment is focused on the eye-witness accounts from the four Gospels.
Start with Jesus, and let Him interpret the rest of the Word and the rest of your life through His lens alone.
Please do! We highly recommend reading the entire Bible -- it's just not the core of the Lux Christi rhythms.
We're sticking to this focused format because we've found it to be beneficial in keeping our eyes on Jesus.
We've also found it to be helpful introducing new friends to Jesus and His heart for them.
Start with Jesus and let Him be the lens to interpret everything else -- the rest of the Bible and your experience.
The Lux Christi community is primarily local, simple (not simplistic!), and built on the foundation of a personal commitment to practice the rhythms.
The weekly Lux Christi Lectio is our way of "baking in" a regular moment for all of us to connect -- focused not on ourselves but on hearing the Word of God. (That's why we have a chat on the livestream for prayers and encouragement -- but only one person reading)
Simple, but -- we hope -- also profound.
(If you're interested, set a recurring alarm and/or reminder on your phone for 11:55PM, Wednesdays, PST and check out the Noon Wednesday Lectio livestream here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGMb4HiFNHm2PjTjzJn2JLw )
Hmmmm.
There's this: "When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them." John 13: 12-17
And this: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
And this: "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10
And many other such passages that clearly show the way of Jesus is found in loving God and loving neighbor in tangible acts of service.
Plus, there's also this:
What does your experience tell you about how you learn something new and put it into practice?
What are some of your favorite transformational moments in your life?
Don't they often revolve around serving others?
Is that enough rhetorical questions?
Let's go and do in Jesus' name, always seeking to love best our neighbor.
Please build in both formal and informal moments of tangible service to your neighbor as your commitment to the Lux Christi Rhythms.
NOTE: THIS SECTION IS A WORK IN PROGRESS AND THESE ARE ONLY A SMALL SELECTION OF GREAT OPTIONS OUT THERE. WE ARE SURE THAT YOU'LL FIND SOME GREAT ONES TO SHARE WITH US IN THE SOCIALS!
Lux Christi is a simple structure focused on helping followers of Jesus receive His Good News and radiate Christ in their daily lives -- especially in places and spaces where darkness reigns.
Start with Jesus, and let Him interpret the rest of the Word and the rest of your life through His lens alone.
We believe "less is more." "Purity of doctrine" may not equal quantity or complexity of statements. That would be like saying the diamond is more "pure" based on the filigree of the ring, or saying the baby in the manger is more "pure" because we cover the manger in gold. "Pure Doctrine" is a living and eternal person: the person of Jesus Christ as revealed in His word.
Our assumption is that anyone committed to the Lux Christi rhythms is in agreement with the following:
THREE ECUMENICAL CREEDS:
APOSTLES, NICENE, ATHANASIAN (the historic summaries of the Christian tradition: what it stands for and the perspectives that it rejects)
12 MISSION THESES of "THE GREAT SENDING" http://www.thegreatsending.org/Resources.html
In Summary Form Here:
